FUSION BIOPSY

About Fusion Guided Biopsy

Fusion technology combines the benefits of MR imaging and real time ultrasound. MRI has the advantage of evaluating 100% of the prostate to look for areas suspicious for cancer. Using this information from the MRI, we fuse these findings withe the ultrasound machine results. This new fusion information can now target areas that may not be visualized during the standard biopsy.

Advantages

Thorough Targeting

Can target areas that may be missed on through a standard biopsy.

In Office Care

Moves the biopsy from the MRI magnet to the urologists office.

Heightened Detection

Improved cancer detection in patients with a suspicious MRI.

Decreased Impact

Provides a possible decrease in un-needed biopsies.

Additional Tracking

Allows direct targeting and tracking of biopsy needles.

Complete Visualization

Visibility of central/transitional zone of the prostate which the standard biopsy does not sample.

Increased Detection Capabilities

The NIH has reported that approximately 40% of men only have a cancer detected on a subsequent biopsy when MR/US fusion biopsies have been performed, compared to the repeated standard 12 core biopsy in which only 10% is detected in a large European prospective study. MRI offers the opportunity to evaluate the entire gland with positive and negative predictive values > 90%, detecting and ruling out clinically significant cancers (intermediate and high grade disease with volumes greater than 0.5 cc).
